    Summary

Seasonal allergies like asthma and rhinitis may be linked to specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) types. Studies show an increased frequency of HLA-B8 and the A1 B8 haplotype in allergic patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunogenetics
    • Allergology
    • Clinical Immunology

    Background:

    • Seasonal pollen-induced bronchial asthma and rhinitis are common allergic conditions.
    • Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) system plays a crucial role in immune responses.
    • Genetic predispositions are investigated for their association with allergic diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between specific HLA antigen and haplotype frequencies and seasonal pollen-induced asthma and rhinitis.
    • To determine if certain HLA profiles are more prevalent in patients with these allergic conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Histocompatibility antigen typing was performed on 62 patients with seasonal pollen-induced bronchial asthma and rhinitis.
    • HLA typing utilized a panel of 70 antisera covering 33 HLA specificities.
    • Phenotypic and haplotype frequencies were compared between patients and a control group.

    Main Results:

    • A decreased frequency of HLA-A11 was observed in the patient group.
    • An increased frequency of HLA-B8 was found in allergic patients (22.6%) compared to controls (9.1%), a statistically significant difference.
    • The A1 B8 haplotype frequency was significantly higher in allergic patients than in controls.

    Conclusions:

    • The study suggests a potential association between HLA-B8 and the A1 B8 haplotype with atopic or hyperreactive states in seasonal allergies.
    • These findings indicate that specific HLA profiles may contribute to the hyperergic immune response seen in allergic conditions.
