    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Psychology

    Background:

    • Psychogenic needs are crucial in understanding mental health.
    • Depression significantly impacts an individual's psychological state and needs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To explore the correlation between psychogenic needs and the severity of depressive disorders.
    • To determine if psychogenic needs are dependent on the depressive state or are stable personality traits.

    Main Methods:

    • Thirty-eight currently depressed patients completed the Comprehensive Mental Health Screening (CMPS) for psychogenic needs.
    • Depression severity was assessed using selected items from the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale.
    • Patients were matched by age and sex with 38 individuals who had recovered from depression.

    Main Results:

    • A correlation was observed between the severity of depression and specific psychogenic needs.
    • Preliminary analysis indicates that psychogenic needs might fluctuate with depressive states.

    Conclusions:

    • Psychogenic needs appear to be associated with the severity of depression.
    • Further research is needed to definitively distinguish between depression-dependent and stable personality-related psychogenic needs.
