Role of cycloplegia in the management of functional myopia

Those who undertake the management of functional or physiologic myopia subscribe to the thesis that the accommodative-convergence synkinesis is the primary factor in the development and progression of this condition; therefore monocular or binocular cycloplegia has been employed as the essence of management for nearly a century. The results of an uncontrolled series of young functional myopic patients who were managed with 1% atropine sulfate drops and bifocal spectacle lenses for up to one year are reported, and the author's views on the overall value of such therapy are presented.
