    Background:

    • Phenol derivatives are common in household and institutional disinfectants.
    • Potential health effects of widespread disinfectant exposure require investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immunotoxic effects of a disinfectant mixture containing phenol derivatives in a mouse model.
    • To determine the dose-dependent effects of orthophenylphenol (OPP), a key component, on immune responses.

    Main Methods:

    • Mice were housed in cages cleaned with dilute solutions of a phenol derivative compound for up to 14 weeks.
    • Immune response was assessed by measuring plaque-forming cell (PFC) generation against sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) in vitro.
    • Flow cytometry was used to analyze FcR+ lymphocyte and macrophage populations.
    • Responses to both T-dependent and T-independent antigens were evaluated.

    Main Results:

    • Four weeks of exposure caused significant depression in PFC generation.
    • Continued exposure up to 14 weeks led to progressively severe immunodepression.
    • Orthophenylphenol (OPP) at 10 ppm caused similar immunodepression; 1 ppm caused slight depression.
    • FcR+ lymphocytes and macrophages were not significantly affected.
    • Both T-dependent and T-independent antigen responses were impaired, with T-dependent responses more affected.

    Conclusions:

    • Preliminary findings suggest that common phenol-based disinfectants can suppress key immune functions.
    • Orthophenylphenol is a significant contributor to the observed immunodepressive effects.
    • Further detailed studies are warranted to understand the immunotoxicological risks of these widely used disinfectants.
