    Summary

    Oestrogen does not appear to activate thyroid function in ewes, despite thyroid activation observed during oestrus. This study investigated the relationship between oestrogen and thyroid activity in sheep.

    Background:

    • Thyroid activation is observed during oestrus in several species.
    • This activation may be linked to concurrent oestrogen secretion.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between oestrogen administration and thyroid activity in ewes.
    • To determine if oestrogen is responsible for thyroid activation during oestrus.

    Main Methods:

    • Measuring thyroid (131)I release rate and plasma protein-bound (131)I concentration.
    • Analyzing plasma protein-bound (125)I from thyroid vein blood in ewes with exteriorized thyroid glands.
    • Administering oestrone or oestradiol dibenzoate to various groups of ewes.

    Main Results:

    • No evidence of thyroid activation by oestrogen was found in any experimental group.
    • This included immature, adult cyclic, anoestrous, and ovariectomized ewes.

    Conclusions:

    • Oestrogen is unlikely to be the cause of thyroid activation observed in normal oestrous ewes.
    • The findings suggest an alternative mechanism for thyroid activation during oestrus.
