Computerised tomography in the leucodystrophies.

P G Procopis

    Clinical and Experimental Neurology
    |January 1, 1979

    Summary

Cerebral computed tomography (CT) scans revealed white matter abnormalities in 9 of 11 leucodystrophy patients. Some adrenoleucodystrophy cases showed contrast enhancement, while metachromatic leucodystrophy scans were normal.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Radiology
    • Genetics

    Background:

    • Leucodystrophies are a group of rare inherited metabolic disorders affecting white matter.
    • Early diagnosis is crucial for management and potential therapeutic interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of computed tomography (CT) scans in diagnosing leucodystrophies.
    • To correlate CT findings with specific types of leucodystrophy.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of CT scans from 11 patients diagnosed with leucodystrophy.
    • Correlation of imaging findings with clinical presentation and biochemical data.

    Main Results:

    • Abnormalities, characterized by decreased white matter density, were observed in 9 out of 11 patients.
    • Three patients with adrenoleucodystrophy showed abnormal scans, with 2 exhibiting contrast enhancement.
    • Two patients with metachromatic leucodystrophy had normal CT scans, including one presymptomatic case.

    Conclusions:

    • CT scans can detect white matter abnormalities in most leucodystrophy cases.
    • Imaging findings may vary depending on the specific type of leucodystrophy, with potential for normal scans in early or atypical forms.
