    Summary

    Nonobstructing ureteral calculi (kidney stones) in the ureter were often asymptomatic and located in the distal ureter. Many stones passed spontaneously, while some remained without causing obstruction.

    Background:

    • Ureteral calculi (kidney stones) are a common clinical issue.
    • Understanding the behavior and characteristics of nonobstructing ureteral calculi is important for patient management.
    • Radiopaque ureteral calculi are frequently detected via excretory urography.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the characteristics and outcomes of unilateral nonobstructing radiopaque ureteral calculi.
    • To investigate the association between intrarenal pelvis configuration and stone behavior.
    • To determine the natural history and management of these specific calculi.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 21 patients with 22 unilateral nonobstructing radiopaque ureteral calculi.
    • Data collected over a 6-year period using excretory urography.
    • Assessment of stone location, association with pain, intrarenal pelvis configuration, and eventual outcome (spontaneous passage, surgical removal, or prolonged retention).

    Main Results:

    • Calculi were frequently asymptomatic (12/22) at the time of urography.
    • A majority of patients (19/21) had an intrarenal pelvis configuration potentially limiting collecting system dilatation.
    • Twelve calculi passed spontaneously, two required surgical removal, and three remained nonobstructing for up to 18 months.

    Conclusions:

    • Nonobstructing ureteral calculi, particularly those in the distal ureter, can be asymptomatic and may not require immediate intervention.
    • The intrarenal pelvis configuration may influence the behavior of ureteral calculi.
    • A significant proportion of nonobstructing ureteral calculi can pass spontaneously or remain inert for extended periods.
