    Summary

Staphylococcus aureus colonization is common in the upper respiratory tract of both healthy individuals and patients with tonsillitis. Notably, S. aureus can be exclusively found in the tonsils and pharynx of some carriers.

    Area of Science:

    • Microbiology
    • Bacteriology
    • Human Health

    Context:

    • Investigating the prevalence of Staphylococcus species in the upper respiratory tract.
    • Comparing colonization rates between healthy individuals and tonsillopathic patients.

    Purpose:

    • To determine the carriage rate of Staphylococcus species, particularly Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), in the upper respiratory tract.
    • To identify the specific sites of S. aureus colonization (nose, throat, tonsils, pharynx).

    Summary:

    • 150 healthy individuals and 162 tonsillopathic patients were screened for Staphylococcus species.
    • Staphylococcus epidermidis was found in a small percentage of subjects.
    • S. aureus colonization was prevalent, found in 40% of healthy individuals and 70% of tonsillopathic patients.
    • 30% of S. aureus carriers harbored the bacteria exclusively in the tonsils and pharynx.

    Impact:

    • Highlights the high prevalence of S. aureus in the upper respiratory tract, relevant for understanding bacterial reservoirs.
    • Suggests tonsils and pharynx as potential exclusive niches for S. aureus colonization.
    • Informs potential strategies for managing S. aureus carriage and related infections.
