Transurethral prostatic resection bleeding was managed with transcatheter arterial embolization. This minimally invasive procedure successfully achieved hemostasis when other methods failed.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Interventional Radiology

    Background:

    • Transurethral prostatic resection (TURP) is a common procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
    • Postoperative bleeding is a potential complication of TURP.
    • Recalcitrant bleeding may necessitate further interventions.

    Observation:

    • A patient experienced prolonged and severe bleeding following TURP.
    • Repeated attempts at fulguration and resection failed to control the hemorrhage.
    • This refractory bleeding posed a significant clinical challenge.

    Findings:

    • Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) was employed to address the intractable bleeding.
    • Gelfoam embolization of both hypogastric arteries was performed.
    • This interventional technique successfully achieved hemostasis.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • TAE represents a viable and effective treatment option for refractory post-TURP hemorrhage.
    • Embolization provides an alternative to repeat surgical interventions.
    • This case highlights the utility of interventional radiology in managing complex urological complications.
