    Summary

A novel chair-type apparatus for transrectal ultrasonotomography enabled mass screening for prostate disease. The study found a high prevalence of latent prostatic disease in apparently healthy men aged 40-76.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Development of a specialized chair-type apparatus for transrectal ultrasonotomography.
    • Implementation of a mass screening program for prostatic diseases using this novel equipment.

    Observation:

    • Evaluation of 132 apparently healthy men aged 40-76 years (mean age 55.0).
    • 48 individuals with suspected prostatic disease underwent secondary urological examinations.

    Findings:

    • Prostatic disease detected in 24 cases (19.4% prevalence).
    • Benign prostatic hyperplasia identified in 18 cases.
    • High prevalence of latent prostatic disease in asymptomatic older men.

    Implications:

    • Highlights the effectiveness of transrectal ultrasonotomography in early detection of prostate conditions.
