Psoriasis associated with anterior uveitis.

E Meyer, B Miller, S Zonis

    Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology
    |July 1, 1977

    Summary

Psoriasis and anterior uveitis (inflammation of the eye) were linked in a family, appearing together in one generation. Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) typing suggests a genetic connection between these conditions.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Rheumatology
    • Genetics
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition.
    • Anterior uveitis is a form of eye inflammation.
    • Genetic factors are implicated in autoimmune diseases.

    Observation:

    • A family presented with a history of psoriasis and iridocyclitis (a type of uveitis).
    • These conditions occurred separately in earlier generations.
    • The conditions were associated in the third generation of the family.

    Findings:

    • Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) typing was performed on family members.
    • Two members carried the HLA-27 antigen.
    • Two other members carried the HLA-17 antigen.

    Implications:

    • The study suggests a potential genetic link between psoriasis and anterior uveitis.
    • HLA antigens may play a role in the co-occurrence of these conditions.
    • Further research into HLA associations with autoimmune diseases is warranted.
