    Summary

Detrusor muscle dysfunction, causing urinary symptoms in women, often involves involuntary contractions. Management with bladder drills and anticholinergic drugs proved effective for most patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Detrusor muscle dysfunction is a frequent cause of lower urinary tract symptoms in women.
    • This dysfunction can manifest as urinary incontinence or urgency and frequency of urination.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the characteristics of detrusor dysfunction in women.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of bladder drills and anticholinergic therapy for detrusor dysfunction.

    Main Methods:

    • Observations were made in 35 patients diagnosed with detrusor dysfunction.
    • Patients were categorized based on incontinence and the presence of urge sensation.
    • Exclusion criteria included urinary tract infection, neurological, urologic, or metabolic diseases.

    Main Results:

    • Involuntary detrusor contractions were observed in 30 patients.
    • 25 patients presented with incontinence (urge incontinence or detrusor dyssynergia).
    • Five non-incontinent patients experienced urgency and frequency (urgency frequency syndrome).

    Conclusions:

    • Decreased cortical inhibitory activity is a potential common pathophysiologic mechanism for detrusor dysfunction.
    • A management approach combining bladder drills and anticholinergic medication showed satisfactory results in 30 patients.
