[Pathohistological studies on so-called subclinical mastitis].

W Seffner

    Archiv Fur Experimentelle Veterinarmedizin
    |January 1, 1978

    Summary

Subclinical mastitis, detected via high-speed mastitis testing, revealed significant inflammatory changes in bovine udder quarters. Many histological findings were present even in quarters with no prior clinical signs or negative test results.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Pathology
    • Bovine Medicine
    • Dairy Science

    Context:

    • Histological examination of 118 clinically normal bovine udder quarters.
    • Samples collected from quarters with no major milk changes for at least six weeks prior to slaughter.
    • Focus on subclinical conditions preceding slaughter.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the prevalence and nature of histological inflammatory changes in apparently healthy bovine udder quarters.
    • To correlate histological findings with clinical history and high-speed mastitis test (HSMT) results.
    • To identify subclinical udder pathology in dairy cattle.

    Summary:

    • 72% of quarters with a positive HSMT showed inflammatory changes (proliferative lobular mastitis, exudative alveolitis).
    • 21% of quarters with a negative HSMT also exhibited histological inflammatory changes.
    • 47% of observed changes were linked to previous clinical disorders, but most findings occurred with no prior udder history.

    Impact:

    • Highlights the limitations of clinical examination and HSMT in detecting all udder pathologies.
    • Underscores the prevalence of subclinical mastitis and its histological manifestations.
    • Informs dairy herd health management strategies for early disease detection and prevention.
