Cutaneous angiosarcoma of the hip.

J F Zdrojewski, S J Hodge, L G Owen

    Southern Medical Journal
    |August 1, 1978
    PubMed
    Summary

A rare angiosarcoma of the hip developed in an elderly patient ten years after treatment for uterine cancer. Multiple prior hip complications, including radiation, infection, and lymphedema, may have contributed to the angiosarcoma development.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Uterine malignancies and their treatments can lead to complex long-term complications.
    • Radiation therapy and surgical interventions carry inherent risks for secondary malignancies and tissue damage.

    Observation:

    • An elderly female patient with a history of uterine malignancy presented with a fatal angiosarcoma of the hip.
    • The patient had undergone prior surgery and radiation for uterine cancer, followed by metastasis requiring further radiation.
    • Complications included aseptic necrosis of the hip, chronic infection from a joint prosthesis, and subsequent chronic lymphedema.

    Findings:

    • A cutaneous angiosarcoma developed in the hip area approximately ten years after initial uterine cancer treatment.
    • The development of angiosarcoma occurred in the context of multiple preceding hip pathologies.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the potential for radiation and chronic inflammation to contribute to secondary angiosarcoma development.
    • Understanding the interplay of prior treatments, complications, and secondary cancer risk is crucial for long-term patient management.
