[Differential diagnostic procedures in localized liver diseases].

W Weiss, P Kahn, G Baumgartner

    Acta Medica Austriaca
    |January 1, 1975
    PubMed
    Summary

This study assessed liver scintigraphy using 99mTc-sulphur colloid and 67Gallium-citrate for early primary hepatic carcinoma diagnosis. While 99mTc-sulphur colloid scans showed 78% accuracy, further research is needed for improved diagnostic performance.

    Area of Science:

    • Nuclear medicine
    • Hepatology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Early diagnosis of primary hepatic carcinomas is crucial for patient outcomes.
    • Liver scintigraphy is a diagnostic imaging technique used to evaluate liver function and detect focal liver diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the accuracy of liver scintigraphy using 99mTc-sulphur colloid and 67Gallium-citrate for the early diagnosis of primary hepatic carcinomas.
    • To determine the sensitivity and specificity of these imaging modalities in detecting focal liver lesions.

    Main Methods:

    • Liver scintigraphy was performed on 430 patients using 99mTc-sulphur colloid and 180 patients using 67Gallium-citrate.
    • The accuracy of the scans was evaluated against autoptically verified cases (n = 119).

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • 99mTc-sulphur colloid scans correctly predicted the presence or absence of focal liver diseases in 78% of cases.
    • Scan data for 99mTc-sulphur colloid showed a 10% false-positive rate and a 28% false-negative rate.

    Conclusions:

    • Liver scintigraphy with 99mTc-sulphur colloid has moderate accuracy in diagnosing focal liver diseases.
    • Further refinement of imaging techniques and interpretation may be necessary to improve the early diagnosis of primary hepatic carcinomas.
