    Summary

    Freshly irradiated wheat in rat diets suppressed immune responses, indicated by lower antibody levels and fewer antibody-forming cells. Stored irradiated wheat or unirradiated wheat did not show this immune suppression effect.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of freshly irradiated wheat on the immune response in rats.
    • To compare the immune effects of freshly irradiated wheat versus stored or unirradiated wheat.
    • To assess the influence of dietary protein levels on the immune response to irradiated wheat.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats were fed diets containing freshly irradiated wheat, stored irradiated wheat, or unirradiated wheat.
    • Immune response was evaluated by measuring antibody titres to four antigens.
    • Numbers of antibody-forming cells in the spleen and rosette-forming lymphocytes were quantified.

    Main Results:

    • Rats fed freshly irradiated wheat exhibited significantly lower mean antibody titres.

    Conclusions:

    • Freshly irradiated wheat may have an immunosuppressive effect in rats.
    • Storage of irradiated wheat for 12 weeks appears to mitigate its negative impact on immune response.
    • Dietary protein concentration does not seem to be a critical factor in the observed immune response to irradiated wheat.
