Latex-bound antifibrinogen test for plasma fibrinogen assay
Journal of Clinical Pathology
|September 1, 1968
Abstract:
The semiquantitative latex-bound antifibrinogen test (Fi test) can be modified to quantitate plasma fibrinogen. The test is rapid and simple and does not require complex apparatus. Although the Fi reagent reacts with early fibrinogen and fibrin breakdown products, the degree of interference is not marked and the test is sufficiently accurate to be of clinical value as a fibrinogen assay in patients with increased fibrinolytic activity.
Insights
A modified latex-bound antifibrinogen test (Fi test) can quantify plasma fibrinogen levels. This rapid, simple assay offers clinical value, even with minor interference from fibrinogen breakdown products.
Area of Science:
- Clinical Chemistry
- Hematology
Background:
- Plasma fibrinogen is a critical protein for hemostasis.
- Accurate fibrinogen quantification is essential for diagnosing and managing bleeding disorders.
- Existing assays may be complex or time-consuming.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the modification of a semiquantitative latex-bound antifibrinogen test (Fi test) for quantitative plasma fibrinogen measurement.
- To assess the accuracy and clinical utility of this modified assay.
Main Methods:
- Modification of the semiquantitative latex-bound antifibrinogen test (Fi test).
- Quantitative measurement of plasma fibrinogen using the modified Fi test.
- Evaluation of assay performance in the presence of fibrinogen and fibrin breakdown products.
Main Results:
- The modified Fi test successfully quantitates plasma fibrinogen.
- The assay is rapid, simple, and requires minimal specialized equipment.
- Interference from fibrinogen and fibrin breakdown products was minimal and did not significantly impact accuracy.
Conclusions:
- The modified Fi test provides a clinically valuable and accurate method for plasma fibrinogen assay.
- This assay is suitable for patients with elevated fibrinolytic activity.
- The simplicity and speed of the test make it a practical option for clinical laboratories.
