    Background:

    • Essential hypertension and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) exhibit altered cellular mechanisms.
    • Calcium (Ca) plays a crucial role in cellular function, including red blood cell (RBC) membrane integrity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate Ca binding differences in the RBC membrane of SHR and patients with essential hypertension compared to normotensive controls.
    • To determine if altered Ca binding in RBCs is a characteristic feature of hypertension.

    Main Methods:

    • Quantified Ca binding to the outer and inner portions of the RBC membrane under varying free Ca concentrations.
    • Utilized red blood cell ghosts (RBCgh) to assess Ca binding at intracellular Ca concentrations.
