    Summary

    Perinatal ventricular arrhythmias occur more often than previously thought, with many cases linked to serious medical disorders. Some infants require ongoing treatment, and a few cases are fatal.

    Background:

    • Ventricular arrhythmias are uncommon in the perinatal period.
    • Limited data exists on the frequency and outcomes of these conditions.

    Observation:

    • The study reviewed four author cases and 37 literature cases, totaling 45 perinatal ventricular arrhythmia cases.
    • Nine cases were diagnosed prenatally (in utero).
    • Three cases persisted post-neonatally, and two cases were fatal.

    Findings:

    • Twenty-four percent of all cases had significant associated medical disorders.
    • A higher proportion, 43%, of cases with ventricular tachycardia had major associated diseases.
    • Prenatal detection occurred in 20% of the total cases.

    Implications:

    • Increased recognition of perinatal ventricular arrhythmias is needed.
    • Associated medical disorders significantly impact prognosis.
    • Further research into prenatal diagnosis and management is warranted.
