Coeliac disease and goitre.

T J Robinson

    Postgraduate Medical Journal

    Summary

Coeliac disease can be associated with thyroid enlargement. This includes simple adenomatous goitre and Hashimoto's disease, highlighting a potential link between gastrointestinal and endocrine conditions.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten ingestion.
    • Thyroid enlargement, or goitre, can manifest as simple adenomatous goitre or autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease).

    Observation:

    • Two patients presented with coeliac disease and concurrent thyroid enlargement.
    • One patient had a surgically removed large simple adenomatous goitre.
    • The second patient had histological confirmation of lymphadenoma, indicative of Hashimoto's disease.

    Findings:

    • The cases illustrate a potential association between coeliac disease and different types of thyroid enlargement.
    • This suggests a possible shared underlying autoimmune or inflammatory pathway.

    Implications:

    • Clinicians should consider screening for thyroid disorders in patients diagnosed with coeliac disease.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms linking these conditions.
    • Early detection and management of thyroid abnormalities may improve patient outcomes in coeliac disease.
