This study presents two unique hyperthyroidism cases. One patient had sequential endogenous hyperthyroidism forms, a first reported case, while the other experienced fatal thyroid storm.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Thyroidology

    Background:

    • Hyperthyroidism encompasses various conditions, including toxic adenoma and Graves' disease.
    • Sequential or coexisting forms of endogenous hyperthyroidism are rare.

    Observation:

    • A 48-year-old woman with a family history of Graves' disease initially presented with toxic adenoma, treated with radioactive iodine.
    • Three months post-treatment, she re-developed hyperthyroidism with diffuse thyromegaly, receiving a second radioactive iodine treatment, suggesting sequential endogenous hyperthyroidism.
    • A second patient, a 64-year-old woman with prior hypothyroidism, presented in thyroid storm and unfortunately died; autopsy revealed hyperthyroid thyroid changes.

    Findings:

    • The first patient represents a novel case of two distinct sequential endogenous hyperthyroidism etiologies.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The second patient's autopsy confirmed hyperthyroid pathology despite a history of hypothyroidism.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the complexity of hyperthyroidism diagnosis and management.
    • Understanding sequential endogenous hyperthyroidism is crucial for accurate patient treatment and prognosis.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms behind sequential and coexisting thyroid disorders.
