    Summary

    Neonatal lupus erythematosus can manifest with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) lesions in infants born to mothers with DLE. These skin lesions may persist and new ones may develop in affected children.

    Area of Science:

    Background:

    • Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is a chronic autoimmune skin condition.
    • Maternal autoimmune diseases can sometimes affect newborns.

    Observation:

    • A 28-month-old child developed DLE lesions at 2 months of age, with persistent and evolving lesions.
    • An 11-month-old infant presented with a probable lupus erythematosus rash at 1 week of age.

    Findings:

    • The cases suggest the possibility of DLE developing in infants of mothers with DLE.
    • Early onset of cutaneous lupus manifestations in neonates is observed.

    Implications:

    • Highlights the importance of monitoring infants born to mothers with DLE for cutaneous manifestations.
