    Summary

    Infection with Treponema pallidum significantly increased nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction in rabbit phagocytic leukocytes. This indicates heightened immune activity in response to the pathogen.

    Background:

    • Phagocytic leukocytes play a crucial role in the innate immune response.
    • Nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction is an indicator of phagocytic cell oxidative metabolism.
    • Treponema pallidum is the causative agent of syphilis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of Treponema pallidum infection on NBT reduction in rabbit peripheral blood phagocytes.
    • To determine if components other than live bacteria influence NBT reduction.

    Main Methods:

    • Rabbits were intratesticularly injected with live Treponema pallidum, T. pallidum-free supernatant, or normal rabbit testes supernatant.
    • Peripheral blood was collected from the rabbits.
    • Nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction by phagocytic leukocytes was measured.
