    Summary

The radioallergosorbent test (RAST) for wheat and rye IgE antibodies is useful for diagnosing bakers' inhaled flour dust allergy. In children with eczema, positive RAST results were common but not always linked to food reactions.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Allergology
    • Clinical Diagnostics

    Background:

    • Wheat and rye flour allergies pose diagnostic challenges.
    • The radioallergosorbent test (RAST) detects specific IgE antibodies.
    • Cross-reactivity between wheat and rye allergens is common.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of RAST in diagnosing wheat and rye allergies.
    • To assess RAST performance in bakers with occupational asthma and children with eczema.
    • To compare RAST results with intracutaneous skin tests.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioallergosorbent test (RAST) was used to measure specific IgE antibodies to wheat and rye proteins.
    • Sera from seven patient groups were analyzed, including bakers with asthma and children with eczema.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • RAST results were compared with clinical history and intracutaneous skin test results.
  • Main Results:

    • Positive wheat and rye RAST scores were observed in 43% of bakers with asthma and 54% of children with eczema.
    • A marginal RAST score of 0.5 was found in individuals without hypersensitivity.
    • RAST results showed good agreement with intracutaneous skin tests in both bakers and children with eczema.

    Conclusions:

    • RAST is a useful tool for diagnosing allergy to inhaled flour dust in bakers.
    • In children with eczema, positive RAST results are frequent but may not always correlate with clinical food hypersensitivity.
    • RAST demonstrates good concordance with skin prick testing for wheat and rye allergies.
