    Background:

    • Understanding human liver anatomy is crucial for surgical procedures and disease management.
    • Previous studies have described liver segmentation, but detailed subsegmental patterns require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To delineate and characterize distinct hepatic subsegments in human livers.
    • To identify and document variations in the size and arrangement of these subsegments.

    Main Methods:

    • Corrosion casting of hepatic vasculature (hepatic artery, portal vein) and biliary system.
    • Injection of colored butyl butyrate solution to create casts.
    • Analysis of 85 human liver specimens to identify subsegments based on vascular and biliary independence.

    Main Results:

    • Nine distinct hepatic subsegments were identified: posterior superior, posterior inferior, anterior superior, anterior inferior, medial superior, medial inferior, lateral superior, lateral inferior, and caudate.
    • The caudate lobe and process were identified as a separate subsegment due to unique vascular and biliary drainage.
    • Subsegment sizes were similar in 48.23% of cases; variations in size at the expense of neighboring subsegments were observed in the remaining cases.

    • The study successfully defined nine hepatic subsegments based on anatomical independence.
    • Observed variations in subsegmental size highlight anatomical diversity relevant for surgical planning and interpretation of imaging studies.
