    Background:

    • Anticonvulsant medications like phenytoin and phenobarbitone are widely used in epilepsy management.
    • A low incidence of myocardial infarction has been anecdotally observed in patients using these drugs.
    • Serum cholesterol levels in epileptic patients on these medications have not been previously characterized in relation to this observation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between phenytoin/phenobarbitone use and myocardial infarction rates.
    • To assess serum cholesterol levels in epileptic patients undergoing treatment with these anticonvulsants.
    • To explore potential underlying mechanisms, such as vitamin D levels, linking anticonvulsant therapy to cardiovascular health.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum cholesterol levels were measured in 96 epileptic patients receiving phenytoin and/or phenobarbitone.
    • These cholesterol values were compared to data from a mass screening in the same geographical area.
    • The study considered the known effect of these medications on serum vitamin D levels.

    • Serum cholesterol levels in the treated epileptic patients did not differ significantly from the general population screening.

    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise mechanism by which vitamin D influences myocardial infarction risk in patients on these anticonvulsants.
