    Summary

    Marine and civilian hearing loss due to noise exposure is similar, particularly in high frequencies for adults over 35. This finding challenges the assumption of greater military hearing impairment from noise.

    Background:

    • Noise exposure is a known risk factor for hearing impairment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze hearing impairment in Marine Corps personnel.
    • To compare hearing loss prevalence between military and civilian populations.
    • To investigate the impact of age and noise exposure on hearing thresholds.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of audiograms from 11,577 Marine officers and enlisted personnel.
    • Evaluation of hearing thresholds at six frequencies (500-6,000 Hz).
    • Determination of speech and high-frequency hearing impairment based on established standards.

    Main Results:

    • Hearing impairment for speech frequencies ranged from 0.6% to 5.9%.
    • High-frequency hearing impairment ranged from 3.4% to 76.5%, increasing significantly in the 35-44 age group.
    • No significant difference in hearing impairment distribution was found between Marines and a comparable civilian group.

    • Noise-induced high-frequency hearing impairment is a significant issue, especially after age 35.
    • The prevalence of hearing impairment appears similar in military and civilian populations studied.
    • Findings challenge the notion of inherently greater hearing loss in military personnel due to noise exposure.
