    Summary

    Acoustic stapedial reflex measures show high variability in normally hearing individuals. These findings suggest caution when using isolated reflex measures to diagnose end-organ hearing loss.

    Background:

    • Acoustic stapedial reflex measures have been proposed as indicators of end-organ hearing loss.
    • Specific reflex characteristics like diminished wide band noise (WBN) vs. pure tone thresholds, flattened reflex threshold duration functions, and reduced reflex relaxation index (RRI) have been linked to hearing impairment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the acoustic stapedial reflex characteristics, including its growth with stimulus intensity, in 25 normally hearing subjects.
    • To assess the reliability and variability of these reflex measures in a healthy population.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurement of acoustic stapedial reflex thresholds using pure tone and wide band noise.
    • Analysis of reflex threshold duration functions.
    • Evaluation of the reflex relaxation index (RRI).

    • The high variability observed in normally hearing subjects challenges the definitive use of these measures for diagnosing end-organ hearing loss without considering other factors.
