    Background:

    • Hyperoxia, or exposure to pure oxygen, can significantly impact physiological processes.
    • Understanding the effects of hyperoxia on blood parameters and oxygen transport is vital.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of chronic pure oxygen exposure on reticulocyte concentration and hemoglobin-oxygen affinity in cats and rabbits.
    • To examine the influence of maternal hyperoxia during gestation on newborn rabbit blood parameters.
    • To elucidate the role of the erythrocyte intracellular environment in hyperoxia-induced changes.

    Main Methods:

    • Animals (cats and rabbits) were exposed to pure oxygen (1-3 hours daily for 2-8 weeks).
    • Reticulocyte counts and hemoglobin-oxygen affinity were measured.
    • Blood parameters of newborn rabbits from hyperoxic mothers were compared to controls.
