    Summary

    Mice with polycythemia maintained for 42 days showed unchanged erythropoietin responsiveness and cycling rates. This indicates continuous production of erythropoietin-responsive cells (ERC) even without erythrocyte demand.

    Background:

    • Erythropoietin (EPO) regulates red blood cell production.
    • The erythropoietin-responsive cell (ERC) population dynamics are not fully understood under sustained high red blood cell levels.
    • Previous studies suggested EPO-induced cell proliferation occurs only under specific depletion conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the erythropoietin responsiveness and cycling rate of ERCs in polycythemic mice over an extended period.
