    Summary

    This study found that hemodiafiltration (HDF) causes a significant loss of free amino acids, but this loss is comparable to conventional hemodialysis. Amino acid levels in plasma decreased only slightly during HDF treatment.

    Background:

    • Hemodiafiltration (HDF) is a renal replacement therapy.
    • Understanding the impact of HDF on nutrient loss, specifically amino acids, is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the extent of free amino acid loss during hemodiafiltration.
    • To compare amino acid loss in HDF to conventional hemodialysis.

    Main Methods:

    • The study involved 5 dogs undergoing hemodiafiltration using a cellulose-acetate membrane (MW 19,000).
    • Amino acid concentrations were measured in both plasma and ultrafiltrate before and after the procedure.

    Main Results:

    • Amino acid loss in the ultrafiltrate was substantially higher (seven times) than the free amino acid content in plasma.
    • Plasma amino acid concentration showed only a minor decrease (20%) post-hemodiafiltration.

    • These findings suggest that HDF may not pose a greater risk of amino acid depletion compared to traditional hemodialysis.
