    Summary

    Electrocardiographic gating offers a new way to measure ventricular ejection fraction using first pass radionuclide ventriculography. This method shows excellent reproducibility and good correlation with other techniques for assessing heart function.

    Background:

    • First pass radionuclide ventriculography is a method for assessing cardiac function.

    • Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) by gated first pass correlated well with gated blood pool ventriculography (r=0.95) but less so with contrast angiography (r=0.72).
    • Right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) by gated first pass compared favorably with gated blood pool ventriculography (r=0.93).
    • Excellent reproducibility was observed for both RVEF (r=0.99) and LVEF (r=0.88-0.98) across observers and sessions.

    Conclusions:

    • Electrocardiographic gating is a valid and reproducible method for first pass radionuclide ventriculography.
    • This technique provides accurate measurements of LVEF and RVEF, comparable to established methods.
    • The right anterior oblique view offers optimal chamber separation for assessing global and segmental ventricular function.
