    Summary

    Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) may increase the risk of benign breast disease (BBD) in postmenopausal women. Longer duration and recent use of ERT were linked to higher BBD risks, particularly with Premarin.

    Background:

    • Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) is commonly used for menopausal symptom management.
    • The association between ERT and benign breast disease (BBD) requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To examine the relationship between ERT use and the risk of developing benign breast disease (BBD) in postmenopausal women.

    Main Methods:

    • A case-control study involving 929 postmenopausal women with BBD and 846 controls.
    • Data collected from a large breast cancer screening program.
    • Analysis of ERT use patterns, including duration, time since initiation, and specific estrogen products.

    Main Results:

    • Prior ERT use was associated with an increased risk of fibrocystic breast disease (OR=1.4) and fibroadenoma (OR=1.6).
