    Background:

    • Essential tremor is a common neurological disorder.
    • The role of adrenergic beta-receptors in essential tremor is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the adrenergic beta-receptor sensitivity in patients with essential tremor.
    • To compare receptor function between essential tremor patients and healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed adrenergic beta-receptor sensitivity using isoprenaline injections.
    • Measured heart rate and postural tremor responses.
    • Included six male patients with essential tremor and six age-matched controls.

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in heart rate response to isoprenaline was observed between groups.
    • No significant difference in postural tremor response to isoprenaline was observed between groups.
    • Relative increases in heart rate and tremor were comparable in both patients and controls.

    Conclusions:

    • Peripheral adrenergic beta-receptor sensitivity is unlikely to be significantly abnormal in essential tremor.
    • Findings suggest that other mechanisms may be more involved in the pathophysiology of essential tremor.
