    Summary

    Subclinical peripheral nerve damage is common in sarcoidosis patients, even without symptoms. Electromyography revealed significantly lower nerve amplitudes in sarcoidosis individuals compared to controls, indicating frequent nerve involvement.

    Background:

    • Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease that can affect various organs.
    • Peripheral nerve involvement in sarcoidosis is not well-characterized, especially in asymptomatic individuals.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the frequency of subclinical peripheral nerve involvement in patients with sarcoidosis.
    • To compare peripheral nerve function between sarcoidosis patients and healthy controls using electromyography.

    Main Methods:

    • Electromyography (EMG) was performed on 29 patients diagnosed with sarcoidosis.
    • EMG data from sarcoidosis patients were compared to data from 29 age-matched healthy controls.
    • Sensory nerve amplitudes of median, ulnar, and sural nerves were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Nineteen out of 29 sarcoidosis patients (65.5%) exhibited abnormally low sensory nerve amplitudes, compared to only 2 out of 29 controls (6.9%).
    • Mean sensory amplitudes for the median, ulnar, and sural nerves were significantly lower in the sarcoidosis group than in the control group.
    • These findings suggest a high prevalence of subclinical peripheral nerve dysfunction in sarcoidosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Subclinical peripheral nerve involvement, specifically mononeuropathy multiplex, is common in patients with sarcoidosis.
    • Electromyography is a valuable tool for detecting early or asymptomatic peripheral nerve damage in sarcoidosis.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the long-term implications of subclinical neuropathy in sarcoidosis.
