    Summary

    Healthy aging involves balanced plasma cortisol and beta-endorphin/beta-lipotropin. These hormones show a direct correlation, suggesting beta-endorphin/beta-lipotropin release occurs even in resting states, not just during stress.

    Background:

    • The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulates stress response.
    • Cortisol is a primary stress hormone.
    • Beta-endorphin/beta-lipotropin (beta-EP/beta-LPH) are endogenous opioids involved in pain and mood regulation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between plasma cortisol and beta-endorphin/beta-lipotropin concentrations in healthy aged individuals.
    • To determine if beta-endorphin/beta-lipotropin is released under resting conditions in the elderly.

    Main Methods:

    • Plasma samples were collected from 51 healthy aged subjects.
    • Concentrations of plasma cortisol were measured.
    • Beta-endorphin/beta-lipotropin-immunoreactivity was quantified.
