B Lindén

Scandinavian Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
    |January 1, 1977

    Summary

Chondrocalcinosis in the wrists, often linked to pseudogout, frequently co-occurs with degenerative joint disease. Treatment typically involved immobilization and phenylbutazone for arthritis attacks.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Orthopedics
    • Crystal Arthropathies

    Background:

    • Chondrocalcinosis, characterized by calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition, commonly affects joints.
    • Wrist chondrocalcinosis can present with pseudogout symptoms and is often associated with degenerative changes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the clinical features and treatment of wrist chondrocalcinosis presenting as pseudogout.
    • To investigate the relationship between chondrocalcinosis and degenerative arthropathy in the wrist.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 22 patients diagnosed with wrist chondrocalcinosis and treated for pseudogout symptoms.
    • Clinical evaluation of joint involvement, arthrosis grade, and treatment outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • Twenty-two patients were treated for wrist chondrocalcinosis-induced pseudogout.
    • Degenerative arthropathy was present in 19 patients; 2 had additional hand joint chondrocalcinosis.
    • No clear correlation was found between the severity of chondrocalcinosis and arthrosis grade.
    • Arthritis attacks were the primary clinical presentation in 13 cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Wrist chondrocalcinosis is frequently associated with degenerative arthropathy and can mimic or coexist with pseudogout.
    • Immobilization and phenylbutazone were the standard treatments for symptomatic episodes.
