    Background:

    • Human T-cell leukemia viruses (HTLV-I and HTLV-II) possess structural genes (gag, pol, env) and a potential transforming gene, lor.
    • Antibodies to surface-expressed env gene products of HTLV have been observed in healthy individuals from endemic areas and in patients with ATLL.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence of antibodies against HTLV env gene products.
    • To explore the etiological role of HTLV-related agents in AIDS.
    • To identify novel functional genes within the HTLV genome.

    Main Methods:

    • Living cell membrane immunofluorescence assay to detect antibodies.
    • Amino acid sequence homology analysis of env gene products.
    • Detection of protein products from the 'X' region of HTLV.

    Main Results:

    • Antibodies to HTLV env gene products were detected in healthy carriers, ATLL patients, and some AIDS patients.
