    Background:

    • Dirofilaria immitis (heartworm) infection is a growing concern in canine populations across the United States.
    • Historically concentrated in the South, the geographic range of this parasitic disease has expanded significantly.
    • Transmission is facilitated by vector mosquitoes, particularly during warmer summer months.

    Observation:

    • Dirofilaria immitis infections manifest not only as pulmonary nodules but also as symptomatic subcutaneous nodules.
    • Related species of Dirofilaria can also present with similar clinical signs.
    • The presence of these nodules can mimic other dermatological or systemic conditions.

    Findings:

    • Canine heartworm disease is increasingly prevalent nationwide, extending beyond its traditional southern endemic areas.
    • Mosquito vectors capable of transmitting Dirofilaria immitis are present in southern, eastern, and midwestern states.
    • Subcutaneous nodules caused by Dirofilaria immitis represent a significant clinical manifestation requiring medical attention.

    Implications:

    • Physicians should include Dirofilaria immitis infection in their differential diagnoses for patients presenting with nodular lesions, especially in endemic regions.
    • Increased awareness among healthcare providers is crucial for timely diagnosis and management of zoonotic potential.
