    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Clinical Psychology

    Background:

    • Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness characterized by periods of relapse and remission.
    • Systematic study of early relapse signs in schizophrenia has been limited.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To systematically investigate the early signs of relapse in chronic schizophrenia patients.
    • To understand the prodromal period preceding a schizophrenia relapse.

    Main Methods:

    • A structured interview was administered to 145 chronic schizophrenic patients.
    • 80 family members of these patients also participated in the structured interview.

    Main Results:

    • Most patients and family informants recognized a prodromal period before relapse.
    • Commonly reported prodromal symptoms included difficulty sleeping, impaired concentration, appetite loss, and depressed mood.

    Conclusions:

    • Patients and families can identify early warning signs of schizophrenia relapse.
    • These findings have significant implications for developing interventions to manage chronic schizophrenia and prevent relapses.
