Benzodiazepine withdrawal syndromes.

Summary

Benzodiazepine withdrawal syndromes, including organic brain syndrome and convulsions, can occur even at prescribed therapeutic doses. These adverse events are more common than typically recognized in psychiatric settings.

Background:

Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed for anxiety and insomnia.
Understanding potential adverse effects is crucial for patient safety.

Observation:

Eight cases of benzodiazepine withdrawal were observed in a psychiatric hospital.
Patients experienced acute organic brain syndrome, grand mal convulsions, and abstinence syndromes.

Findings:

Withdrawal symptoms occurred in patients using benzodiazepines at prescribed therapeutic doses.
These benzodiazepine withdrawal syndromes are potentially underreported.

Implications:

Clinicians should be vigilant for benzodiazepine withdrawal, even with prescribed use.
Further research is needed to clarify the prevalence and management of these syndromes.
