Why palpate the radial artery?

C N Martyn, R J Corrall, B M Frier

    Summary

Palpating the radial artery wall before death showed no correlation with histological findings of atherosclerosis or vascular disease. This suggests that assessing radial artery wall palpability offers no significant clinical insights.

    Area of Science:

    • Vascular biology
    • Clinical diagnostics
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • The radial artery is frequently palpated in clinical practice to assess vascular status.
    • Histological examination of arteries reveals changes associated with atherosclerosis and sclerosis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the correlation between the pre-mortem palpability of the radial artery wall and its post-mortem histological findings.
    • To determine the clinical utility of radial artery palpation in assessing arterial health.

    Main Methods:

    • Radial artery wall palpability was assessed in 43 patients prior to death.
    • Histological examination of the radial artery was performed at necropsy.
    • Palpability was compared with histological evidence of atheroma, Mönckeberg's sclerosis, and clinical vascular disease.

    Main Results:

    • No significant relationship was found between the assessed palpability of the radial artery wall and histological changes.
    • The degree of palpability did not correlate with atheroma or Mönckeberg's sclerosis.
    • Palpability assessment showed no association with the presence of clinical vascular disease.

    Conclusions:

    • Palpation of the radial artery wall does not provide reliable clinical information regarding underlying arterial pathology.
    • Clinical assessment of radial artery wall palpability is not a useful diagnostic tool for vascular disease.
