    Background:

    • Nicotinic acid (niacin) administration causes a characteristic facial flush.

    • Prostaglandins are implicated in various physiological responses, including vasodilation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of prostaglandins in the facial flush induced by nicotinic acid.
    • To determine if opioid receptors are involved in this response.
    • To evaluate the utility of the niacin flush model for assessing prostaglandin inhibitor activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Intravenous administration of nicotinic acid (25 mg) to subjects.
    • Administration of prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors (indomethacin, benorylate) or naloxone.
