    Summary

Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) was found in male genital nerves, particularly in the penis and erectile tissue. This neurotransmitter may play a key role in regulating male reproductive functions.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Urology
    • Endocrinology

    Background:

    • Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) is a peptide neurotransmitter with known regulatory functions.
    • The role of VIP in the autonomic innervation of the male reproductive system is not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and distribution of VIP in the autonomic nerves of the male external genitalia.
    • To explore the potential role of VIP in the physiological functions of the male reproductive tract.

    Main Methods:

    • Immunocytochemistry and radioimmunoassay techniques were employed.
    • Analysis of thirty surgical specimens of male external genitalia.

    Main Results:

    • High concentrations of VIP were detected exclusively in fine autonomic nerves within the male genitalia.
    • VIPergic nerves were most abundant in the penis, surrounding pudendal arteries and within the corpus cavernosum erectile tissue.
    • Significant VIP nerve fibers were also observed in the vas deferens and epididymis.

    Conclusions:

    • The substantial presence of VIP in the male genital tract suggests its importance as a neurotransmitter.
    • VIP may be involved in the nervous control of blood flow, secretion, and muscle tone in the male external genitalia.
    • This finding highlights a potential novel role for VIP in male reproductive physiology.
