Background:

Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) is a rare genetic disorder affecting zinc absorption.
Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing AE symptoms.

Observation:

Two siblings presented with clinical signs of acrodermatitis enteropathica.
Laboratory tests revealed significantly low serum zinc levels in both individuals.

Findings:

Oral administration of zinc sulfate (100 mg daily) resulted in complete resolution of dermatological and systemic manifestations.
Interruption of zinc therapy led to the recurrence of symptoms, which again improved upon treatment resumption.

Implications:

These cases suggest a genetic defect in intestinal zinc absorption as the underlying cause of AE.
Zinc sulfate therapy is a safe, effective, and potentially diagnostic treatment for acrodermatitis enteropathica.
