    Summary

    Beta-blocking drugs may worsen peripheral vascular disease. Stopping these medications significantly improved claudication distance and muscle blood flow in patients with peripheral vascular disease.

    Background:

    • Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) frequently co-occurs with hypertension and ischemic heart disease.
    • Beta-blocking drugs are commonly prescribed for these conditions.
    • Concerns exist that beta-blockers might exacerbate PVD symptoms.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of beta-blocking drugs on peripheral vascular disease.
    • To assess the effect of beta-blocker withdrawal on PVD indices.

    Main Methods:

    • A study involving 11 patients with PVD on beta-blockers.
    • Claudication distance and 133Xe clearance for skin and muscle blood flow were measured.
    • Beta-blocker administration was ceased, with blood pressure managed by alternative means.
