    Background:

    • Current Australian suture standards reference the British Pharmacopoeia (B.P.).
    • A laboratory survey revealed that B.P. knot pull strength tests are inadequate for modern sutures available in Australia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the appropriateness of existing British Pharmacopoeia (B.P.) suture testing methods.
    • To recommend updated testing protocols for suture knot pull strength.

    • Suture tensile strength was measured without prior soaking.
    • A constant rate of extension apparatus with a load cell was utilized.
    • Different knot types (simple and surgeon's knot) were used based on suture material (synthetic vs. catgut).

    • The British Pharmacopoeia (B.P.) and United States Pharmacopeia (U.S.P.) tensile strength requirements were met by all tested sutures.
