    Summary

    Regular physical exercise that enhances oxygen consumption can reduce the need for asthma medication (beta 2-agonist aerosol) in adults with perennial asthma. Heavy exercise is safe for asthmatics.

    Background:

    • Perennial asthma affects numerous adults, often necessitating daily medication.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the effects of two distinct physical training programs on perennial asthma patients.
    • To assess the impact of improved maximal oxygen consumption through exercise on beta 2-agonist aerosol use.

    Main Methods:

    • A blind, controlled, randomized study involving 27 adults with asthma over 2 months.
    • Two groups: a control group with unchanged oxygen consumption and a training group with improved maximal oxygen consumption.
    • Medication use, specifically beta 2-agonist aerosol, was monitored based on peak expiratory flow (PEF) thresholds.

    • The training group significantly reduced their beta 2-agonist aerosol use from 4.94 to 3.41 puffs daily (P<0.05).
