    Summary

    Routine monitoring of eosinophil counts is not valuable for patients taking penicillamine for rheumatoid arthritis. Studies found eosinophilia occurred equally with other treatments and showed no link to adverse reactions.

    Background:

    • Penicillamine is a medication used for rheumatoid arthritis.
    • Eosinophilia, an increase in eosinophils, can be a side effect of some drugs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the incidence and clinical significance of eosinophilia in patients treated with penicillamine for rheumatoid arthritis.
    • To determine if routine monitoring of eosinophil counts is beneficial for managing patients on penicillamine.

    Main Methods:

    • A cross-sectional study of 204 patients was conducted.
    • A longitudinal study of 89 patients treated with penicillamine was performed.

    Main Results:

    • Eosinophilia was observed with similar frequency in patients taking penicillamine, gold, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
    • No consistent relationship was found between eosinophilia and adverse reactions in patients on penicillamine.

    Conclusions:

    • Routine monitoring of eosinophil counts is unlikely to be beneficial in managing patients taking penicillamine.
    • The clinical significance of eosinophilia in this context appears limited.
