    Summary

Endoscopic papillotomy is a generally safe procedure with low long-term mortality. However, a small risk of acute cholecystitis exists, suggesting prophylactic cholecystectomy may be beneficial.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Surgical Endoscopy

    Background:

    • Endoscopic papillotomy is a common intervention for bile duct stones.
    • Long-term outcomes and complication rates require ongoing evaluation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the long-term safety and efficacy of endoscopic papillotomy.
    • To identify specific complications and their management implications.

    Main Methods:

    • A long-term control study involving 102 patients.
    • Follow-up conducted at least 12 months post-procedure.

    Main Results:

    • Overall mortality was 13.7%, with only one death attributed to biliary issues.
    • Complications occurred in 9.8% of patients, notably two cases of acute cholecystitis.
    • No instances of cholangitis were recorded.

    Conclusions:

    • Endoscopic papillotomy demonstrates a favorable long-term safety profile regarding biliary mortality.
    • The occurrence of acute cholecystitis post-papillotomy suggests considering prophylactic cholecystectomy.
